IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Carolyn
Spence
December 21, 1932 – October 3, 2025
Carolyn Spence, passed away this morning, peacefully in her sleep, Friday, October 3, 2025. Carolyn was born on December 21st in 1932 in South Bend, Indiana to her parents Jesse and Agnes (Huffman) Douglass, the second of three daughters. Due to her father's work as an engineer for the growing telephone industry, the family moved briefly to California, returning to Indianapolis, Indiana and subsequently home to Muncie.
Carolyn graduated as a proud Bearcat with the Class of 1950. Following graduation Carolyn married her Bearcat football player, Jack Spence. Jack had graduated the year before and joined the Marine Corps. The couple quickly returned to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and into Marine military life. Children began arriving shortly thereafter. Both Carolyn and Jack embraced the Semper Fi attitude throughout their life. Carolyn and Jack's parents were strict disciplinarians in raising their offspring and it carried forward as Carolyn and Jack learned their parenting skills.
Carolyn was a mother of three by age 21. She was active in the children's school PTA, serving as president on two occasions. She was president of the Yorktown band boosters and Jack drove the band bus to all events. All four of the Spence offspring were Yorktown band members.
As the children reached school age Carolyn supplemented the family income, working outside the home. Carolyn worked for Rinker's Jewelers, Ball Stores, Merchant's National Bank and retired from Central Indiana Gas Company. She developed many friends in her work and enjoyed the memories.
Carolyn became a master gardener. She had bragging rights in winning the Powder Puff driving rodeo held each year in conjunction with the Marsh Supermarkets transportation department, where husband Jack was the senior driver. She and Jack were members of the Yorktown Methodist Church, and for a period, Carolyn taught Sunday school.
Carolyn could be stoic, abrasive, and direct as she handled her life, but she loved little children and was very conscious of anyone who struggled. She was an avid contributor to many charitable organizations. She loved watching major league baseball, Sunday golf, Gunsmoke, the Walton's, and the Rifleman, in addition to hundreds of puzzles and word search puzzles.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, her Marine, and her sisters Marciadena and Judith, and her beloved canine friend, Taffy.
She is survived by her children, Terry (Jackie) Spence, (Bulverde, Texas), Doug Spence, (Selma, IN), Marcia (Ken) Kelly (Yorktown), and Peggy (Mike) Johnson (Yorktown), five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The family thanks Southern Care Hospice for the care and compassion given during Carolyn's journey, especially Patty and Paula. Both gained Carolyn's trust and confidence. The family appreciates everyone for their sympathies and condolences. There will be family grave site services for the immediate family.
