Charles Rosco Jackson "Charley", 88, passed away at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2009 at Heritage Pointe in Warren, IN.
Charley was born on July 19, 1921 in Huntington, WV to the late George F. Jackson Sr. and the late Flossie E. (Barton) Jackson.
He graduated from Huntington, WV High School in 1939. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1947.
He served in the U.S. Navy from July 1942 to December 1945 serving in the South Pacific as a Seabee. He retired as a Lt. CMDR.
Charley married Dorothy C. (Coy) Jackson on December 8, 1944 at the First United Methodist Church in Xenia, Ohio, services were officiated by Charley's Brother Rev. Dr. George F. Jackson, Jr.
Charley moved to Blackford County, IN from Hazlet, NJ in 1960 to Manage the JC Penny Store on The Square in Hartford City, he was the former owner-operator of The Varsity Shop in Hartford City, and the Street Commissioner of Hartford City from January 1980 to December 1990.
Charley was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he sang in the Church Choir for 45 years and Grace Notes (Quartet). He was a member of Scottish Rite Valley of Ft. Wayne, Grant County York Rite, Mizpah Shrine of Ft. Wayne. He was a Charter Member of Blackford Shrine Express Drill Team, a member of the Blackford Shrine Club, Blackford Masonic Lodge #106 F&A.M., Moyer-Pooler American Legion Post #159 in Hartford City and a member of the Order of The Eastern Star Purity Chapter.
He was a former Blackford Golf and Country Club Golf Champion in 1970 and a former Babe Ruth League Umpire.
Charley will be sadly missed by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy C. Jackson of Hartford City; daughters, Joy Anne (husband, Bud) Bolten of Anderson; Virginia Sue "Ginnie" (husband, Rande) Clevenger of Pendleton; Pamela Jo (husband, Rick) Weaver of Selma; grandchildren, Ryan (wife, Amy) Webb, Jamie Bell, Carrie Clevenger, Josh Weaver, Gabe Weaver; great-grandchildren, Austin Webb, Haylee Frank, Julian Webb, Evan Webb; sister, Virginia Ford of Ironton, Ohio; sister-in-law, Eloise Thomas of Xenia, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Rev. Dr. George F. Jackson Jr.
Visitation for Charley will be from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2009 and from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at Grace United Methodist Church, 312 W. Washington St., Hartford City.
There will be a Blackford Masonic Lodge Memorial Service at 7 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2009 at the church.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at Grace United Methodist Church,, with Rev. Lloyd Hall from Grace United Methodist Church and Rev. T. Russell Clements from Center Chapel United Methodist Church officiating.
Interment will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery, 10703 N. State Rd 3, Muncie, IN.
Military Graveside Service will be conducted by the Moyer-Pooler American Legion Post #159.
