Cornellia "Dean" (Ross) Slaven, 83, of Portland, IN, passed away Saturday, August 1, 2009 at Bluffton Regional Medical Center, in Bluffton, IN. She was born on August 22, 1925 in Oneida, TN to the late Emanuel and Julia (Boyatt) Ross.
Dean worked for Montgomery Wards as a sales associate for many years. She then worked for Jay School Corporation for 5 years as a kitchen cook. Dean was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Portland; was a member of the Wonder Wives Home Ec Club in Portland; and was also active in the Ravine Garden Club in Palakta, FL. She was also an avid tea-pot collector.
Surviving relatives include her three loving children, Ken Slaven (wife: June) of Topeka, IN; Carolyn McNorton (significant other: Randy Clements) of Portland, IN; and LaDonna Slaven (significant other: Jackie Maze) of Fort Wayne, IN; brothers Edgar Ross (wife: Connie); and Ralph Ross, all of Dayton, OH; sister Betty Helton (husband: James) of Muncie, IN; grandchildren Josh Slaven (wife: Tiffany); Jennifer Slaven; Kendra Hummel (husband: Brad); Stephanie Cole (husband: Dennis); Joshua Maze; Spencer Maze; and Zachary Maze; 3 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Dean was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband Kenneth Slaven; son Jimmy Silas Slaven; and 4 sisters.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at Garden View Funeral Home, 10501 North State Road 3 Muncie, IN. Calling will take place 1 hr prior to the memorial service. Pastor David Helton will officiate the service. Burial will follow in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Muncie.
