Dorothy Peterson Metzger, 85, of Warren and formerly of Muncie, died Sunday evening, January 6th, 2013 at Heritage Pointe Healthcare in Warren. She was born May 5th, 1927 in Hazelton, IN., the ninth of ten children and the youngest daughter of the Rev. George Gilbert & Mary Lois (Willis) Burch.
Dorothy retired in 1987 from Ball State University, where she had been a professor of history. Her first teaching job was at Kuhner Junior High School, where she taught English. She loved history and teaching. She was a member of St. Andrew''s Presbyterian Church. She loved arts, crafts, traveling and visiting family. Professional affiliations include, American Association of University Women, American Association of University Professors, American Historical Association, Phi Delta Kappa, and Pi Lambda Theta.
Dorothy is survived by a sister Evelyn G. Burch of Hartford City; many nieces and nephews and several close friends. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Baird Metzger in 2004; six brothers Robert, Paul, James, Edward, George, and Jack Burch; two sisters Ruth Gagnon, and Olive Renfrow.
The Memorial Service for Dorothy will be held, Saturday, January 12th, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Garden View Funeral Home, with Pastor Melodie Wager officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery, Winslow, IN. Family and friends may call Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Family Care Hospice or Heritage Pointe, with envelopes provided at the funeral home.
