Edith l. Pittenger, 104 passed away Sunday morning, February 5, at IU Health Ball Memorial--just short her 105th birthday.

She was born February 24, 1912 in Pendleton, Indiana, the eldest of three. She graduated from high school in 1929, and Ball State Teachers College in 1933. She was a member of Pi Omega Pi (Business honorary), Sigma Pi Rho (Latin honorary), and Kappa Delta Pi (Nation Educational honorary). She taught Latin and Business at Pendleton High School, 1933. She was employed at Ball State from 1948-1978. In 1948 she became Secretary to the Business Manager; 1966, Coordinator of Payroll Information; 1975, Assistant Director of Personnel; 1978, retired with emeritus status and was honored with the Administrative Staff Distinguished Service Award.

In 1956, while working for J.C. Wagner, Ball State Business Manager, they with five others decided employees needed a credit union. As appointed treasurer, she ran the credit union from her desk drawer. This was in addition to her full-time job. She remained credit union secretary/treasurer until 1988. Edith then remained an active member of the credit union board until 2004--nearly 50 years of dedication. In 2004 she received the Women Equality Day Award; in 2007 the Community Center of Vital Aging Award; and for 2008, she was selected for inclusion in Who''s Who in America''s Credit Unions; and also became a charter member of the 1918 Society Gold as a loyal alumna of Ball State.

Her favorite quote, "Old age occurs the moment you realize there isn''t something wonderful about to happen just around the corner. In some people this occurs very soon; in others, not at all." This is what she lived by. Her attitude about life which she so enjoyed was far away from old. After retirement, travel was her favorite thing to do which she did with friends and family. At age 96, she rode around the Indianapolis Speedway with Arie Luyendyk Jr. at 180 mph and at age 102 she got to ride again with Mario Andretti. To celebrate her 100 years, she went parasailing with two of her grandchildren.

Family was everything to her. She was a true matriarch--keeping us together. Edith is survived by two sons, Jay ( Shirley) Pittenger, Muncie; Lynn (Anne) Pittenger, Venice, Florida; one daughter, Janet (Randy) Cates, Modoc; step-son, Rex (Donna) Pittenger, Muncie. There are 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Glen and C. Mable McCarty; a brother, Don McCarty; a sister, Vera Ruth Bishop; and her husband of 45 years, Francis Pittenger.

In July 2015, at the age of 103, Edith decided to move from her home of 82 years in to Westminster Village. The family would like to thank the staff in the Essex wing for their excellent care, friendliness, and their encouragement. She thoroughly enjoyed living there.

The family requests memorials be made to St. Paul''s Methodist Church, where she was a long-standing member, or to a charity of one''s choice.

Funeral services for Edith will be held Friday February 10th 2017, at 10 A.M. at Garden View Funeral Home with Pastor Nancy Hunt and Garett Cates officiating. Burial will follow in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 4-8 P.M. Thursday, February 9th, 2017.
