Edmund Lawrence Niec, 92, of Muncie, IN, passed away Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie following an extended illness. He was born on November 9, 1916 in Farrell, PA to the late Michael and Anna (Fularz) Niec.
Edmund served in the US Air Force for 4 years as a bombardier during WWII. He later married Grace T. Larocca on April 27, 1957 in Pittsburgh, PA. The couple then moved to Muncie in 1961 with the opening of the Westinghouse Large Transformer Plant. Edmund was the supervisor of all brazing and welding and was one of the original team members that opened the plant. He retired in 1980 after 42 years of service.
Edmund was always an airplane enthusiast. He also enjoyed golfing as a former member of Green Hills Country Club. He belonged to the Amvets of Muncie and was a parishioner of St. Mary Catholic Church.
Edmund is survived by his wife of 52 years, Grace Niec; three daughters, Carol Howard (husband: Ron), Teresa Pence (husband: Steve), and Mary Bicknell (husband: Terry) all of Muncie; son Edmund A. Niec of TN; 5 grandchildren, Tabatha, Tiffanie and Anthony Pence and John and Samuel Miller; and sister Olga Morgenstern of Sharon, PA.
Catholic Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 21, 2009 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Muncie. Father Andrew Dudzinski will officiate the service. A full military rites burial will follow in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Muncie. Calling will be one hour prior to the service on Monday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 6415 Castleway W.
