Erna Ethel (Buck) Swoape, 98, of Sparta, TN, formally of Muncie, IN died Monday, March 16, 2009 at the White County Community Hospital, Sparta, TN. She was born on November 11, 1910 in Jamestown, TN the daughter of Caleb and Mary Ellen (Chapman) Buck. In 1958 she married Winfred A. Swoape in Elkhart, IN.
Erna was employed by Goodyear in Muncie, IN working for 32 years and retiring thereafter. Erna also enjoyed crocheting as well as gardening.
Surviving relatives include son, Shelby C. Buck of Sparta, TN; daughter, Carla Smith (husband: the late Arnold) of Elkhart, IN; step-daughter, Peggy Steven (husband: Cliff) of Muncie, IN; grandchildren, John Smith, Lon Smith, and Ron Smith; four great-grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; several cousins; and several step-grandchildren.
Erna was preceded in death by her parents; husband Winfred; brothers Caster Buck and Haskel Buck; and sisters Effie Hicks, Mable Garrett, and Jewel Phillips.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Garden View Funeral Home 10501 North State Road 3 Muncie, IN. Pastor Lane Fairchild will officiate the service. Burial will follow in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Muncie. Visitation will be Saturday, March 21, 2009 from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
