Evelyn Ida DeVoss, 95, formerly of Butler and Farmland, IN, passed away Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at Parker Health & Rehab Center. She was born on May 23, 1915 in Coles County, IL to the late Martin Glen and C. Jennette Bridges Smith. Evelyn is a graduate of Butler High School and Ball State University receiving both her Bachelor and Master Degrees. On August 19, 1944 she married Donovan Worth DeVoss in Butler, IN.
Evelyn was a teacher for 31 years before retiring in 1978. She began teaching in Mudsock and other one-room schools in Dekalb County. She also taught in Winchester, Center, Dunkirk, Ridgeville, Lincoln, Stoney Creek, and Parker City Elementary schools. She was a member of Farmland United Methodist Church and UMW; Randolph County Rural Couples Club; Randolph Co. Historical Society; Randolph Co. Busy Homemakers Home Ec Club; and the Indiana Retired Teachers. Evelyn also enjoyed traveling abroad and locally; gardening; genealogy; and spending time with her family.
Evelyn is survived by her loving children: Dianna Shore (husband, Randy) of Farmland and Joseph DeVoss of Grapevine, TX; brother George Smith of Reno, NV; sister Lucille Frick of Toledo, OH: sisters-in-law: Mary Mae Duvall and Martha DeVoss, both of Farmland; 4 grandchildren: Dana Ertl (husband, David) of Madison, WI; Donnita Aigner-Cobb (husband, Guy) of Farmland; Martin DeVoss (fianc, Jessica) of Grapevine, TX; and Shelby DeVoss also of Grapevine, TX; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband Donovan DeVoss of 58 years; son-in-law Donald Aigner; brothers-in-law: Harvey Bud'' Frick; John DeVoss; and Bill Evers; and sister-in-law Delight (DeVoss) Evers.
Visitation will be on Friday, September 17, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Garden View Funeral Home, 10501 N. State Rd. 3, Muncie. The funeral service will be on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Sharon Summers officiating. There will also be an hour of calling one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Burial will be in Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
