Forrest finished the race and went to be with his Lord on December 6, 2021. Forrest was born March 7, 1936 in Unionville, Indiana to Ol J. (Amos) and Forrest O. Durnal.
A 1954 graduate of Royerton High School, he attended Ball State University and enlisted in the Army National Guard on November 1, 1958. He was a 1967 Honor Graduate of the Indiana Military Academy where he received the Saver Award. He served in the 138th Signal Battalion for almost twenty-five years before retiring with the rank of Major. He served active duty doing disaster recovery in Kennard, IN after the tornados in 1974 and was also activated during the blizzard of 1978.
Forrest married Shirley Bailey in 1956 and they raised three daughters together. In 2006, he reconnected with his high school prom date Shirley "Gabby" McBride. They married in July 2008 and he lovingly cared for her until she lost her battle with cancer in November 2008.
Forrest was a co-owner in the family business, Durnal Electric Sales, until it closed in 1981 He retired from Kirby Risk after managing the Anderson location and the Electric Motor Repair Shop in Muncie.
Forrest was an active member of Fairlawn Church of Christ where he once served as a deacon, treasurer, usher, and church bus driver transporting many teens to Camp Indogan in Angola, Indiana each summer. Many who grew up at Fairlawn speak of the positive influence he was in their lives.
Forrest was a man of wit and wisdom who loved to tease. The staff at Richards Restaurant, Sunshine Café, IHOP, and Steak 'n Shake knew him well and brought him much happiness. When asked if he needed anything, Forrest was well known for responding, "A short stack of hundreds." He was always trying to be helpful. If you complained of pain or illness he would offer help saying, "I can get my chainsaw!" He had definite opinions about many things and wasn't shy about sharing them. He was a proud Gramps who supported his grandchildren by attending their special activities and encouraging their educational endeavors.
Survivors include his three daughters and their spouses, Dr. Toni (Gerald) Dunning, Diamond Bar, CA; Kristi (Jim) Tesmer, Crawfordsville; Susan (Randy) Shepard, Mooresville; bonus daughters Debra Gruwell and Melissa Barrett. Surviving grandchildren include Kayla and Noah Ison, Tori and Luke Tesmer, Ryan (Sarah) Dunning, Kim (Anthony) De Lazzaro, Katie Dunning and Kali, Hannah, and Gracie Woolum. Surviving great-grandchildren include Tatiana and Abigail De Lazzaro and Kadyn Pollard. He is also survived by siblings Mary Meister and John (Marcia) and William (Pamela) Durnal; several nieces and nephews, and very special friend, Paul Cunningham.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Ronald Meister, sister-in-law Jayne Durnal, stepdaughter Cheri Hartman, grandchild Jordan Tesmer and his friend since childhood, John E. Wolfe.
Services will be at Garden View Funeral Home, 10501 N. State Road 3, Muncie, Indiana on Tuesday, December 21, 2021. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with the funeral service beginning at 2:00 p.m.. Graveside Military Honors will follow.
