George Melvin Smith, 86 of Redkey, died Monday afternoon, August 29th, 2016 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. He was born March 14th, 1930 in Muncie and was the son of the late Alfred & Ethel May (Lines) Smith.
George retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad after working 43 years; he retired from there as a track inspector. He enjoyed cutting and splitting firewood. George was known for being out manicuring his yard. He enjoyed listening to "Blues" music. George honorably and faithfully served his country in the United States Army.
George is survived by his three children, Ronald Smith (Marsha) of Phoenix, AZ, Monica Dilworth (Kevin) of Carey, ID, and Tina Gann (Bobby) of Rosedale, IN; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 44 years Lucille Smith in 1996, his companion of 16 years Carolyn Dyson, a brother Bud Smith, two sisters Betty Briner and Mary Harley.
Funeral Services for George will be held Friday, September 2nd, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Garden View Funeral Home. Burial with military honors being conducted by the United States Army and the Delaware County Honor Guard will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A special gratitude of thanks for his caregivers Melissa Malone and Isaiah Atnip that they showed to George.
