Gladys E. Yates of Chesapeake, Virginia passed away at the age of 97 early Monday, August 30, 2021 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She was born on October 21, 1923 in Hartford City, Indiana to the late Ralph and Mary (Wolverton) Edwards. Gladys was raised by her aunt and uncle, Minnie (Edwards) and William A. Luzadder. They became wonderful, loving parents after Gladys's mother died when she was 3 months old.
Gladys graduated from Hartford City High School. She married Harry R. Yates, and they relocated to Virginia. Together, Harry and Gladys opened Tidewater Overhead Door in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where she managed the office for several years. Gladys was a member of Elizabeth River Baptist Church in Chesapeake, Virginia. Harry and Gladys journeyed through life together until his passing in 1998.
Gladys is survived by her daughter, Donna Zoss (Chas); granddaughter, Scarlett Ramic (Dino); great grandchildren, Henry and Hayes Ramic; nieces and nephews, Judy Goad (John), Becky Black (Steven), Ruth Ellen Coyle (Vincent), Gene Yates, and Stephen Yates; dear friend, neighbor, and overseer of her care, Chuck Taylor; and her loving dog, Dolly.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Mary (Wolverton) Edwards and Minnie (Edwards) and William A. Luzadder; her husband, Harry R. Yates; son, David Richard Yates; sister, Ruth (Edwards) Fobiano; brothers-in-law, Frank Yates (Betty), Arnold Yates (Martha), and Charles Yates (Mary Ellen); nephews, Ronald Yates (Brenda surviving), Tommy Yates, and Robert Yates; and special cousin, Luther VanGordon (Carolyn surviving).
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 10, 2021 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM in Garden View Funeral Home, 10501 North State Road 3, Muncie with funeral services immediately following at 2:00 PM, also in the Funeral Home, officiated by Dennis Rush. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Muncie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Lottie Moon Fund or to any charitable organization of the donor's choice.
