Jacob "Jake" Haffner, Jr., 75, passed away unexpectedly Thursday evening, December 3, 2009 at his residence.
He was born September 5, 1934 in Muncie the son of Jacob and Frances (Gates) Haffner, Sr.. He graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1952 and attended Ball State University. He served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Haffner was an international representative for the United Steel Workers Union for thirty years prior to his retirement in 1996. He previously was a representative for United Mine Workers Union.
He was a democratic precinct committeeman and was a member of the American Legion and S.O.A.R. He received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from Governor Evan Bayh.
Surviving are his wife of twenty-two years, Betty; two sons, Erik Tester (wife, Mariah), Muncie and Matthew Tester (wife, Tabatha), New Knoxville, OH; six grandchildren, Kyle, Bryon, Erika, Kenneth, Arin, and Alexis; a brother, Max Haffner (wife, Janice), Melbourne, FL; a sister, Linda Crawford (husband, Tommy), Yorktown, IN; several nieces and nephews; and his pets, Sheba, Willie, and Mr. Lucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be held in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 7, 2009 with Pastor John Malzahn officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, 10703 N. State Rd. 3, Muncie, with military rites by Veterans of Delaware County.
Friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday or one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.
