John "Jack" Childs, 76, passed away March 5, 2007 at Ball Memorial Hospital following a long courageous battle with illness. He was born on April 10, 1930 to the late Howard and Mary (Amick) Childs in Vernon , IN. He graduated from Vernon High School and Purdue University . He served in the veterinarian branch of the Air Force in Florida , taught high school and served as a 4-H leader in Mooreland , IN.
In 1957 he married Beverely Conwell. They would have celebrated 50 years of marriage on July 6 of this year. Jack and Beverely moved to Columbus , IN and he started a new career as a livestock buyer with Stadler Packing Co. In 1959, he moved to Muncie and with his father-in-law, Raymond Conwell, bought the Muncie Commission Company at the Marhoefer Stock yards. Upon the stock yards closing, Jack opened his own stock yards in Northern Delaware County which he operated until his illness forced the closing in 2002.
He was a strong supporter of the local 4-H programs. He so loved his work and the people he met in this capacity were very special to him. But more than this, he lived a devoted Christian life, becoming a born-again Christian at an early age, he served in many capacities in local ministries.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Beverely (Conwell) Childs, his daughters, Cathy Mickler (husband: Jay) of Muncie; Tamara Doorly (husband: Brian) of Warrenton, VA and Kim Waites of Rutherfordton, NC; six grandchildren, Brittany and Jennifer Mickler, Renee, Joshua, Meika Doorly and Gabrielle Waites, his sister Ruth Davee of Columbus, IN, and her children, Bob, Jane, Carol and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents Mary and Howard Childs; Beverely''s parents Raymond and Ruby Conwell; Brother-in-law Charles Davee; two special uncles: Robert and Chester Amick.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday March 9, 2007 at Garden View Funeral Home 10501 North State Road 3 Muncie, IN. Pastor Gregg Parris will officiate the service. Burial will follow at the Mooreland Cemetery in Mooreland , IN. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday from 2-8 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to "The New Interurban" in appreciation for transportation to dialysis. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
