John R. McCreery, 90 of Muncie, died Sunday morning, February 26, 2017 at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born June 3, 1926 in Tipton, IN and was the son of the late George Washington & Ellen (Thatcher) McCreery.
John was a 1944 graduate of Muncie Central High School. He proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps during WWII. He was an avid bowler, fisherman, and golfer. John was a member of the Muncie Bowling Hall of Fame. He retired from Mid-West Towel as a supervisor and drove for Polo Jeep -Eagle. John was a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #33.
John is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Mary Jane (Crump) McCreery, whom he married on May 23, 1947 of Muncie; his children Jayne Gibbs Powers (Ty) of Muncie, John Robert McCreery (Karen) of Albuquerque, NM; and Jackie Sue McCreery (Michael Downing) of Muncie; nine grandchildren, Damon Price (Heather) of Miamisburg, OH, Derron Price (Tiffany) of Monroe, OH, Vicky Jauk (Helmut) of AL, John Rodney McCreery of CA, Brett Barrett (Amy) of Memphis, TN, Johnnie Lee Mercer (Cindy) of Newton, AL, Alan Mercer of Indianapolis, Cecila Medeiros of Brazil, SA, and Christopher Caldwell (Emma) of Muncie; twelve great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law Charles "Tiny" R. Crump of Muncie; close friends Wilfred Brinker and Dale Foreman (Nancy) of Muncie. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters, and granddaughter Shannon Gibbs.
Funeral Services for John will be held Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Garden View Funeral Home. Entombment with military honors being conducted by the United States Marine Corps and the Delaware County Honor Guard will follow at the Mausoleum Chapel in Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #33, Lifestream or the Wounded Warrior Project with envelopes provided at the funeral home.
