John Paul Summers passed away March 28, 2010 at St. Francis Heart Hospital in Indianapolis, IN surrounded by those who loved him. He was born October 21, 1936 in McMinnville, TN, to the late Fred and Bertha (Shirley) Summers. John had three siblings: Waymon (Rosemary) Summers; Reba (Roy) Walker; and Linda Summers (James) Akins. Waymon and Linda preceded John in death.
John was a successful businessman, owning Summers & Sons Concrete for over 30 years. He retired in 2001. John did extensive commercial work all over central Indiana. He was also a building contractor for a number of years in both TN and IN. He was a member of the Moose Lodge (TN), Eagles (Muncie), and the Church of Christ. John was a huge sports fan; he bled BLUE during the Indianapolis Colts season, and loved college basketball and football, as well as NASCAR. One of the high points of his last days was the Butler Bulldogs win on Saturday. We know he will be rooting them on from above! John loved talking and spending time with his family. We are grateful for the love and support he gave so generously. He will be sorely missed.
John is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Bettie (Bowden) Summers; daughters: Stacey Kiernan (David) and Kasey White; sons: John Summers (Jeannie); Barry Summers; Steve Evans; Chad Summers (Kara); and 15 grandchildren: Courtney Kiernan Williams; Devin Kiernan; Graham, Katie & Kelly Summers; Race, Dalton, Barrie, Lorrie & Jensen Summers; Ronnie White; Spencer & Natalie Evans; Noah & Paige Summers; and 2 great-grandchildren: Cassaundra Kiernan Geiger and Samantha Kiernan Williams.
John enjoyed guardianship of his niece, Angie Akins and an especially close bond with friends and cousins: Damon Summers, Hazel Burns, and Maude Humbright. He also had close and loving relationships with his many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Garden View Funeral Home, 10501 N. State Rd. 3, Muncie as well as on Thursday, April 1, 2010 from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. The funeral service will be on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be in Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
