Leo (Sonny) Carey, 68 of Muncie, IN, our beloved husband, father, grandpa and friend passed away Friday June 27, 2008 at Ball Memorial Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on September 8, 1939 in Fairfield, PA. the son of Calvin Carey and Annie (Ziegler) Carey and was one of 13 children. He married Sandra (Williamson) Carey on November 16, 1962 in Muncie, IN.
Leo was a lifelong Teamster and retired from Preston Trucking in 2000. He was a life member of the American Legion Post #19, a member of the 40 & 8 of Yorktown, the Teamsters Union Retirees, the VFW Mens Auxiliary and Eagles Post #231. He enjoyed spending time with his family, the occasional trip to the local casino or riverboat, riding motorcycles and watching NASCAR races.
Surviving relatives include a wife of 45 years Sandra J. Carey of Muncie, IN. A son, Scott Carey (wife Tina) of Yorktown, IN; A daughter Angel (Jody) Silvers (husband David) of Albany, IN; eight grandchildren, Kristi Carey, Jenna Carey, Cody Carey, Zac Trissel, Abby Silvers, Holly Silvers, Heather Silvers and Ryan Silvers; sister-in-law Shelia Cope of Yorktown; brother-in-law Michael Coffman of Unicoi, TN, and close family friends Lloyd Green and Ronnie Breedlove. Leo is also survived by a brother, June (wife Janet) of Skyesville, MD, sister, Ethel Parker of Baltimore MD and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are both parents, one sister, Miriam Slick and one brother, Jack Patterson.
Services will be Saturday, July 5, 2008 at 11am at Farmland Friends Church, 8311 West State RD 32, Farmland, IN with visitation from 10-11am. Pastor Justin Simos will officiate. Graveside services will follow in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery Muncie at 2:30pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to Farmland Friends Church or to Cancer Service of Delaware County, Little Red Door, 401 W Jackson St, Muncie, IN 47305.
