Lewis E. Matchett of Muncie, Indiana passed away at the age of 97 on Friday, May 28, 2021 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Indiana. He was born on October 7, 1923 to the late Walter and Mamie (Smiley) Matchett in Salamonia, Indiana.
Lew had four brothers and four sisters. He graduated from Madison Township High School in Salamonia, Indiana in 1941. He served in the United States Army Air Corps as an Air Traffic Controller in Rome, Italy during WWII. After his service, he met Janiece Long, and they married on November 6, 1948. They moved to Muncie, Indiana in 1953, and Lew worked for Chevrolet Muncie for 38 years in skilled trades before retiring in 1984. Lew loved being outdoors doing yard work. He also enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family.
Lew is survived by his wife of 72 years, Janiece (Long) Matchett; children, Susan Finnegan (Don) of Muncie, Indiana and Steven Matchett of Indianapolis, Indiana; five grandchildren, Shane Finnegan (Karen) of Muncie, Indiana, Ryan Finnegan (Jessica) of Spokane, Washington, Rachael Taylor (Adam) of Noblesville, Indiana, Daniel Matchett (Cara) of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Brandon Matchett of Indianapolis, Indiana; five great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Lew was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mamie (Smiley) Matchett; seven siblings; and son, Bruce Matchett.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 4, 2021 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM in Eden Church, 11205 North State Road 3, Muncie with funeral services immediately following at 12:00 PM, also in the church, officiated by Tammy Hallam and with Military Honors. Burial will follow in Salamonia Cemetery, Salamonia, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society, 5635 W 96th Street, Suite 100, Indianapolis, Indiana 46278.
