IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Linda Sue
(Burhenn) Phelps
March 8, 1939 – November 27, 2021
Linda Sue (Burhenn) Phelps was born March 8, 1939, the eldest daughter of Clarence W. and Ruby E. (Sewell) Burhenn. She entered her heavenly home on November 27, 2021, with her devoted husband, Doug, by her side.
Linda was saved at an early age at Eaton Ave Baptist Church, now called Old Towne Hill. She was baptized in a creek in Muncie in the early 1950's. One of her early witnessings came when she was enrolled at Lincoln Elementary School. A teacher said that humans evolved from monkeys. Linda raised her hand and confidently stated that this was not true. She said, "God made us."
After moving to Yorktown in 6th grade, Linda made friends easily, loved school, and enjoyed living in the country. She graduated from Yorktown High School in 1957 and married Doug R. Phelps in 1958. They had three sons and spent 22 years in the Marine Corps with Hawaii as their last duty station. She loved being a Marine wife and seeing many different parts of the country during their military career. While in Hawaii, Linda took a few painting lessons and found her talent. When they retired in 1977, the family moved home to Yorktown, Indiana where she worked for Yorktown Community Schools and Merchants National Bank. Doug's career then took them to southern Indiana, where they lived for 18 years. Here she created beautiful paintings and photography and sold them in Nashville, Indiana. She and Doug returned to Yorktown in 2010 to be closer to their three sons.
Linda had a great appreciation for life's beauty and simple pleasures. She loved sunrises and sunsets, country drives, and playing hymns on the piano. Although she had a chronic lung condition for over 30 years, she never gave up trying to live a full and productive life.
Linda's love for her family was immeasurable. Her husband, Doug, was her soulmate and survives her. She was a devoted mother to her three sons that survive her, Jeff (Amy), Wade (Tracy), and Todd (Lynn) Phelps. She cherished her 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She will be missed by her sisters, Sharon Hiatt and Sandy Ladd.
