Liza June Adkins' Obituary
Liza June (Johnson) Adkins passed away on Monday, December 20, 2010 in Indianapolis at the home of her daughter and was attended by Vistacare Hospice services.
June was born in Grimsley, Tennessee to Etta Mae (Pryor) and James Gilbert Powell. She was a graduate of Clinton High School and earned an Associate of Arts degree from Ball State University. In 1964, she was accepted into to a government technical school at their Atomic Energy Facilities in Oak Ridge, Tennessee to study as a scientific glassblower. In 1968, she moved to Muncie and began a 20 year career at Ball State University in this unique profession.
June participated in many volunteer activities during her lifetime: Anderson Center for Chemical Dependency, Meals on Wheels, and American Healthcare Network. She was a tireless advocate for the acceptance, treatment, and understanding of mental health illnesses. She also held social group meetings in her home, the favorite of which was her Ladies Crochet Club. She was a devoted member and passionate missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served faithfully in the LDS Family History Center and as Single Adult Representative.
She is survived by her three daughters, Kathryn McCartney (Husband, Tim); Linda Haskins (Husband, Mike); and Tracy Pereira (Husband, Edson). Her surviving grandchildren include, Amanda McCartney, Jesse Beaty (wife, Christina), and Julia Beaty, Michael, Daniel, and Sara Haskins, Ross, Grant, and Blake Pereira and two great-grandchildren, Logan and Que Beaty. She is also survived by a very special niece whom she helped raise, Nada Amburn, and her son, Steve Amburn.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 23, 2010, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 4800 W. Robinwood Dr., Muncie, IN 47304, with Bishop Robert Alcorn officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Friends may call at Parson Mortuary from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2010, or one hour prior to time of service Thursday at the church.
