Obituary

MUNCIE - Marie Schwartz, 103, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital of natural causes.
Marie was born April 3, 1908 in Putnam County, near Greencastle, to the late Edgar Perkins and Alice (Knauer) Perkins.
She grew up on a farm and attended school in Putnam County. Marie graduated from DePauw University in 1930. She taught school in Elletsville, Greencastle, Selma and did substitute teaching in Muncie for several years. She lived in Ft. Wayne and Shelbyville prior to moving to Muncie in 1947 with her husband, Harry F. Schwartz and two sons, Tom and Frank Schwartz.
She was an active member of Crescent Avenue Methodist Church while in Ft. Wayne. Marie was affiliated with Phi Delta Gamma Sorority while in Shelbyville. Marie was an active member of College Avenue United Methodist Church and the Muncie Mission Auxiliary. Along with her husband, she co-founded the Huffer Memorial Children's Center in 1965 where she continued until 1972 and remained on the board until 1982.
She was instrumental in meeting on homes across town to talk about the value of a good day care center in the Whitely Community. Marie supported community activities through membership and participation, receiving the Boy Scouts Gold Key Award in 1958, at that time being the first woman in Delaware County to receive that honor. In 1973, she was named Humanitarian of Muncie by the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She and her husband hosted many AFS students and Ball State international students and teachers in their home.
Marie is survived by son, Frank Schwartz, (wife, Rosalee), Indianapolis; their five children; nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren; son, Tom Schwartz, Muncie, his children David, Denver, and Kristin, Australia.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985.
Calling hours will be Monday, May 16, 2011 at College Avenue United Methodist Church from 9-11 a.m.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 16, 2011 at College Avenue United Methodist Church with Pastor Chip Gast officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Family has requested donations be made to Huffer Memorial Children's Center, 2000 N. Elgin Street, Muncie, IN 47303.
