Martha "Joanne" Ellis, 89, passed from this mortal existence on Saturday, January 23, 2021. Joanne, a native of Parker City, Indiana, was the 11th of 12 children born to the late Shirl and Effie Chalfant.
Joanne graduated from Parker High School. She attended Indiana Business School, graduating from the stenography program. She married John E. Ellis in 1951 and raised a family of three children together until John's passing in 1969.
Joanne had been a long-time member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many teaching and leadership positions. She served as a volunteer in the community, working with Meals on Wheels. She worked at the Department of Public Welfare for 18 years. She spent her retirement years living in Muncie.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, Shirl and Effie Chalfant; husband, John E. Ellis; son, Michael Ellis; seven brothers; and four sisters.
Joanne is survived by her sister, Betty Cox of Brownsburg, IN; son, Richard Ellis (Sally) of Virginia; daughter, Janet Green (Wes) of Anderson, IN; daughter-in-law, Nancy Ellis of Muncie, IN; ten grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren.
Private visitation will be held in Garden View Funeral Home, 10501 North State Road 3, Muncie with private funeral services immediately following, also in the Funeral Home, officiated by Tyler Ellis. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Muncie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Humanitarian Aid.
