Mavelyn Marie Smith, 90, of Gaston, died early Monday morning, September 29th, 2014. She was born September 28th, 1924 in Muncie, IN, and was the daughter of the late Marion Lafayette "Faye" Hill & Katherine (Paris) Gump.
A lifelong resident of Delaware County, Mavelyn was a member of the Prairie Grove Congregational Christian Church in Gaston. She enjoyed Bible study groups and attending services. Mavelyn enjoyed baking, sewing, and making crafts. She was active in the school booster programs, and served as school secretary for Harrison School. Mavelyn also worked for Muncie Cold Storage and Red Amick''s Truck Plaza as a bookkeeper, and was a member of the Eastern Star. Mavelyn loved and enjoyed her family, and her pet dog Amber.
Mavelyn is survived by her daughter, Deborah J. Broyles (James) of Hamilton, OH; her son, Mark A. Smith (Kent Nordvig) of Washington D.C.; two granddaughters, Jessica Broyles of Asheville, NC, and Lara Smith of Myrtle Beach, SC; a sister, Margaret Powers of Indianapolis; and a daughter-in-law, Arlene Smith of Gaston. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe L. Smith in 2011; a son, David L. Smith in 2003; and a sister, Jerri Mixell.
Funeral Services for Mavelyn will be held Friday, October 3rd, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Garden View Funeral Home, with Pastor Eldon Morehouse officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Family and friends may call Thursday, October 2nd, 2014 from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
