Michael Lee Clevenger, 77, known affectionately to those close to him as Mike, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026, in Hartford City, Indiana. Born on April 17, 1948, in Muncie, Indiana, to the late Max Buford and Evelyn Oletha (Baker) Clevenger, Mike’s life was a vivid tapestry woven from a rich array of experiences, passions, and the indelible marks of the decades he lived fully.
A true jack of all trades, Mike’s career as a handyman was more than a job—it was an extension of his resourceful spirit. Those who called upon Mike knew him as a man who could tackle almost any task, old or new. Though he was often heard grumbling—always complaining about something—this trait became part of the mosaic that made him so unmistakably himself.
His younger years were shaped by the roots of rural Indiana life, growing up on a farm and proudly dedicating a decade to 4H. These early experiences grounded him, teaching him the value of hard work, perseverance, and community. Hunting, trapping, and fishing were among his youthful pursuits, moments when he connected deeply with the outdoors and the rhythms of nature. As he aged, Mike found joy in the quieter mental battles of checkers and chess, appreciating history with a keen interest that kept his mind sharp and his conversations lively.
Mike’s admiration for the military and his time spent serving in the Air Force were sources of enduring pride. He carried the honor and camaraderie of that chapter in his life always close to his heart, a testament to his commitment and dedication.
He enjoyed reminiscing about his glory days, tales often peppered with the humor and grit of a man who had truly lived. Though his personality could be demanding at times, those traits underscored a man who cared deeply and expressed himself candidly.
Mike is survived by his son, Adam Clevenger; his devoted nephews, Jeff (Tiffany) Scott and Josh (Mandi) Curts, who lovingly took care of him in his later years; his sisters Phyllis, Suzanne, Cindy, and Ann; and a broad circle of many nieces, nephews, and cousins who remember him with affection. He also joins in eternal rest his sisters Dee and Janis, and brothers Darwin, Gene, and Pat—family ties that remain forever significant.
A graveside service to honor Mike’s life will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Gardens of Memory Cemetery, located at 10703 Indiana 3 in Muncie, Indiana.
