Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we share Michael Christopher Edwards, aka Mikie, 51, passed away unexpectedly at home on the morning of Friday, May 9, 2025. Mike was born at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Indiana, to Michael Hahn and Nancy Edwards on February 14, 1974; a fitting day for a man who spent much of his life freely showing love to others. Mike graduated from Delta High School in 1992. During his time at Delta, he was a member of the football and wrestling teams. His first job was at the Kreme Kup in Albany, followed by a stint as manager at the Pizza King in Albany (according to his brother David, the two of them specialized in "after-hours", personal pie making), then later worked at Gill Brothers Furniture. Mike then pursued college studies in criminal justice and attended the police academy in 2003. He went on to serve as a police officer with the Muncie Police Department where he worked as a patrol officer, served in the Criminal Investigations Division, assisted with fleet maintenance, and was a member of the hostage negotiation team. He also worked as a security guard at Muncie Central High School and Northside Middle School. After retiring he enjoyed working at Delta Middle School as an instructional assistant and coached Football there as well. Mike had always worked 2-3 jobs to support his family…and well, his car addiction. This past year he was able to enjoy being at home with Brandi and renovating their home together. More than any job title, Mike was proudest of being a family man. He wore a lot of hats over the years, but the ones that mattered most to him were being a loving husband, a proud dad, a caring son and brother, a fun uncle, and a good friend to just about everyone he met. He married his best friend and love of his life, Brandi, in March of 2006. For the last two decades, the two of them built a beautiful family together, founded on faith, friendship, and genuine love for one another. They were true teammates in life—leaning on one another through the hard times and laughing together through the good. One of their shared loves was dogs, especially their pack of Frenchies, who brought them endless joy (and a little chaos). Mike embraced Brandi's love for Frenchies, and Brandi embraced Mike's love for antique cars. As if any further proof was needed that the couple were two halves of one heart, it always showed in how they supported each other's passions in life. It didn't matter if it was a movie night on the couch, a family vacation, or just being with their boys, Mike and Brandi found comfort and happiness simply in being together. He cherished time with family—through coaching Decklin's (a.k.a. fun-sized Mikey) Metro and Delta Football teams or joyfully sharing in Daxton's world, his oldest son, whom Mike often referred to as, "a national treasure." From playing video games, going to see the latest superhero movie, or just hanging out around the house, Mike loved every minute of it. His pride for his boys showed in everyday conversation—often challenging his nephews to try and take on Daxton in video games, and beaming when he talked about Decklin's growth in sports. Whether on the PlayStation or the little league fields, Mike celebrated it all with his boys. He was such a present father and always made time for each of his boys, both receiving the fullness of his love. He and his brother David were always close, and there's a good chance if the rock band KISS was ever performing even remotely close to home, the two of them were in attendance together. He was also an amazing uncle to David's sons, and they can't remember a football game in the last ten years where Uncle Mikey wasn't on the sidelines, cheering them on as if they were his own kids. As his parents grew older, Mike stepped in selflessly without hesitation, helping care for them with Brandi by his side—another way he showed up for the people he loved. If you knew Mike, there is a good chance you've got a great story or fond memory of your time with him. His deep voice and big smile made him instantly recognizable, but if those didn't give him away, you could always spot him behind the wheel of a classic car. And if you were ever lucky enough to get the chance to hear him tell a story, you knew you were in for a real treat. He loved a good conversation, especially if it involved sports. Mike would want it to be noted that if the topic of Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James came up, you could count on Mike to passionately argue for MJ—every time. He could fill a room with laughter through a basketball debate or a story he shared, but more than anything, Mike's true impact was made through loving and supporting those who mattered most to him. He showed up for his people, every single time, and that is what he'll be remembered for most. Though Mike's time with us was cut short, he has gone home to the Lord. He is now happily reunited with his daughter Skylee, his mom Nancy, and his granny, who were waiting with open arms. Mike's legacy of laughter and love will continue to live on through those who were blessed to call him family and a friend. Mike is survived by his wife of 19 years, Brandi Edwards; his sons, Daxton and Decklin; father, Michael Hahn; brother, David Edwards, and his wife, Kelli; his nephews, Brady, Braxton, and Bronson Edwards; and his mother-in-law, Jo Ann Hill all of Muncie. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Rosemarie Margaret Kuhn; his mother, Nancy Edwards-Hahn; his daughter, Skylee Edwards; and his father-in-law, Jerry Lane. A visitation will be held at Garden View Funeral Home on Monday, May 19, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM, with a service celebrating Mike's life immediately following at 7:00 PM.
