Oretha June Monroe, a beloved mother, grandmother, and steadfast matriarch, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, in Muncie, Indiana, surrounded by her loving family. she was 96. Born on August 25, 1929, in Eaton, Indiana, to the late Earl Wesley and Twilo (Norton) Fields. Oretha’s life was a testament to devotion, kindness, and quiet strength.
Oretha's journey began amid family hardships, having been the second child after the loss of an infant brother before her birth. From an early age, she showed deep compassion, caring tenderly for her brother and sister, setting a foundation of love and support that would define her life. She met the love of her life, Frank, under joyful circumstances—a wiener roast at his sister Margaret’s home, where Margaret was playing matchmaker. The couple married at Margaret’s home in April 1948, beginning a partnership of over 53 years filled with love, resilience and examples of Godly Christians.
Throughout her life, Oretha embraced many roles with grace. For years, she stayed home with her children until they reached their teenage years, nurturing a loving and supportive household. Later, she contributed to her community by working at Scott’s in the fabric department and then at Merchants Bank main office as a switchboard operator and teller. She faithfully served at the bank until stepping down when her youngest daughter, Janice, lost her eyesight due to diabetes. Oretha’s keen sense of duty transformed her into the unwavering CEO of the home, offering ceaseless care and support, especially rallying around Janice during her time of need.
Oretha’s personality shone brightly through the many memories cherished by those who knew her—she was godly, deeply loving, treated everyone with equal respect, and remained steadfast through all of life’s challenges. Always "there" when needed, she exemplified reliability and compassion. She learned sewing, baking, and cooking from her mother and grandmother, becoming famed for her banana bread and chicken and noodles, recipes that carried the warmth of family tradition.
A devoted member of the Fairlawn Church of Christ, Oretha found joy and purpose in serving others, notably collaborating with fellow ladies to create tray favors for hospital patients—small acts of kindness that reflected her generous spirit.
Oretha’s welcoming home was a refuge for family and friends alike during challenging times, embodying her innate generosity. Her family remembers her as a loving mother to her son, Michael (Judy); daughter, Margaret; a cherished grandmother to Amy (Lance) Hale, Holly (John) Rimley, Jeremy (Jessica) Monroe, Christopher Monroe, Daniel Monroe, Chandler (Madison) Hale, and Shelly (Jimmy) Baker Sr.; a proud great-grandmother to, James (Montana) Baker Jr., Fancy (Mitch) Durbin, Adam Roberts, and Shelby (Mitch) Marshall; and blessed with three great-great-grandsons and one great-great-granddaughter who all carry forward her legacy. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Jess Brown, along with a wide circle of nieces and nephews who remember her fondly.
Oretha leaves a lasting imprint on many hearts, her memory treasured above all as one of unwavering love and strength. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband Frank; her son Jerry; daughters, infant Michelle and Janice; grandson Halex Hale; brother Darrell (Pat) Field; and sister Jaundola (Ray) Coffman.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during a visitation on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service from 1:00 p.m. at Garden View Funeral Home, located at 10501 IN-3, Muncie, Indiana.
Oretha June Monroe’s life was a vibrant tapestry woven with faith, sacrifice, and immeasurable love. Though her presence is dearly missed, her spirit will forever echo in the hearts of those who had the honor of knowing her. Her legacy of kindness and steadfast devotion stands as a beacon, reminding us all of the enduring power of family and compassion.
