Orville C. Sims Jr., 83, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Parker City Health and Rehab Center after an extended illness.
He was born in Sawtail, California, May 6, 1926, the son of Orville and Ruth Sims. Orville was a lifelong Muncie resident and served his country in the Navy during WWII on the Destroyer escort USS Coffman in the Atlantic. During the war Orville had the privilege to serve as an honor guard for the funeral of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He married his wife Nora on November 28, 1944 and they settled down to have a family.
Orville was a heavy machinery operator for many years before his retirement and helped landscape the Colorado Air Force Base and build many things in Muncie.
He was known for being a hard worker as well as being very loving and caring. Orville also enjoyed cooking and was an animal lover.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Nora (Brock) Sims, Muncie; one son, Joseph Sims (wife-Kathryn), Muncie; three granddaughters, Tina Crabtree (husband-Darrell), Muncie, Jody Lutz, Muncie, and Katie Elsbury, Indianapolis; three great grandchildren, Tyler Crabtree, Tanner Crabtree and Savanna Lutz; a niece, Sandy Petterson and nephew, Scott Stafford, both of Muncie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Joan Stafford.
Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel with Rev. Matthew Leffler officiating.
Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, 10703 N. State Rd. 3, Muncie.
Family and friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m., Monday or after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday.
