IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard "Darrel"
Hughes
August 23, 1933 – July 30, 2025
Richard "Darrel" Hughes, a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, known by his children for his quiet wisdom and strong work ethic, passed away at the family farm of nearly 60 years in Selma, on July 30th, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 91 years old.
A graduate of Muncie Central High School and from Ball State University with a Bachelors Degree in Accounting, Darrel served as a stateside photographer in the Marines, and was on the Supervisory Committees and Board of Directors for several Credit Unions in Muncie. He retired from Borg Warner after 30 years, working various positions in the IT department. He was an avid volunteer at Ball Hospital and Muncie Eye Center for many years and was a member of the American Legion, Amvets, and Freemasons.
He and his wife loved to travel, traveling throughout the United States and England. His family remembers many vacations to the beaches of South Carolina, where he loved searching for seashells and relaxing near the ocean. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors, raising cattle, building puzzles and watching sunsets with his wife on the patio while sipping a glass of wine, iced tea or lemonade. He took pride in his family and the life he and his wife built together and will be greatly missed by many.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Marshall Watt and Norma (Gray) Hughes and his sister Carolyn Bird (Bob). He is survived by his best friend and greatest love of his life, his wife of 69 years, Carolyn Sue (Lawson) and their children Phillip (Vicky) Hughes, Ellyn (Dann) Morgan, Terrie (Darrell) Orr, Douglas Hughes, 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, his brothers Larry (Judy) Hughes, Steve (Marcia) Hughes, brother-in-law Jack (JoAnn) Wagoner, and his best friend of many years Estel (Karola) Hines.
Calling hours will be held from 10am-Noon on Friday, August 8th, with a service to follow at 12pm at Garden View Funeral Home, 10501 N State Road 3, Muncie Indiana.
Should friends desire, the family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers.
