Obituary

Richard Irwin Poland of Muncie, IN passed away at the age of 92 on Monday, December 6, 2021 after being hospitalized with pneumonia complications brought on by Covid 19. He was born on July 8, 1929 to Fred and Dora Poland in Muncie, IN

Dick met his wife, Barbara Jean Ray at Royerton High School, and they were married on December 7, 1950, 71 years together. Dick was a member of Center Chapel Church for many years, where he served in various positions through the years, notably building and property maintenance.

Dick is survived by his wife, Barbara of Muncie; son, Chris Poland of Muncie; daughter, Becky Jump of Houston,TX; grandson, Kelly Jump of Los Angeles, CA; brother, Bill Poland (Jayne) of Muncie; nieces, Debbie Osborn (Vic) of Avon, IN and Phyllis Barton of Muncie; and nephews, Doug Poland (Robin) of Dunkirk and Sam Poland of San Antonio, TX. He had several great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Dick also enjoyed his relationships with Barbara's brothers and sister and their spouses and all their families.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Dora Poland; brothers, Robert Poland (Roberta) and Don Poland (Jenny); and nephew, Terry Jack Poland.

Dick grew up on the family farm. After graduating high school at Royerton in 1947, he started a job at Warner Gear as a sweeper that turned into a 46-year career as a production manager. He retired in 1993. He knew how to do almost anything. He built 3 houses for his family, and his niece, Phyllis still lives in the last one on the last acre and a half of the family farm on Royerton Road. Dick always had a second job, sometimes farming, installing sprinkler systems with brother-in-law, Charlie, and even running a root beer stand for 2 summers. He was a long-time member of the Moose and the Masonic Lodge # 46 and was a veteran of the Korean War serving as a staff sergeant. Dick loved sports and excelled at bowling and golfing. He participated in several leagues, achieving 2 holes in one in his career and a high bowling score of 298! He also played slow-pitch softball and basketball. Another hobby was woodworking, including helping his son renovate 3 historic homes. He and Barb enjoyed swing dancing, and two-stepping was his favorite. They also enjoyed playing cards and bingo and going to the casino with their friends.

Services will be held at Garden View Funeral Home, 10501 N State Road 3, Muncie with visitation on Monday evening, December 13, 2021 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm with visitation and family gathering at noon on Tuesday, December 14, 2021 with services beginning at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Muncie. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be sent to Center Chapel Church, 900 W Royerton Road, Muncie, IN 47303.
