Sarah Gladys Wilson, 98, passed away Tuesday evening, February 23, 2010 in Wilmington, NC.
She was born June 4, 1911 in Burkeville, KY the daughter of William and Octavia (Booher) Bybee. Where she attended a one room school house and moved to Muncie in 1939.
For many years she and her husband owned and operated Wilson's Antique Shop on Centennial Avenue. The Shop was easily recognized by stained glass windows in the top floor of the building. They often visited auction houses in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. Her favorite auctioneer was Kenny Ellenberger and she often referred to him as her number two son.
Mrs. Wilson was an avid gardener and kept her children and friends supplied with vegetables and beautiful flowers. Another hobby she enjoyed was quilting. During cold winter days you might find her in the basement working away on a quilt that she had pieced from scraps of cloth. She was a great saver of all things regardless of how small. When you entered her shop you found just about anything you were looking for.
Surviving are four daughters, Myrtle Walker, Eaton, IN, Melvie Barber (husband, Bill), Wilmington, NC, Dorothy Tolbert (husband, Carl), Sun City, AZ, and Helen Moody, Peoria, AZ; a son, Willie Wilson, Sarasota, FL; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. All of the family loved to go to the shop and find some of the goodies that grandma had stored there.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Wilson; a sister, Nellie Cooksey; and a foster brother, Newell Hayden Riddle.
Services will be held in The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 with Pastor Keith Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, 10703 N. State Rd. 3,Muncie.
Friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel from 4-6 p.m. on Monday or one hour prior to services on Tuesday.
