Thomas W. Powell, 85, passed away Thursday afternoon, July 9, 2009 at Morrison Woods.
He was born July 17, 1923 in Industry, Illinois, the son of Mae (Smith) Powell and Benjamin Powell. Thomas grew up in Astoria, Illinois and graduated from Astoria High School in 1941. Following graduation, he moved to the Muncie area.
Thomas worked at the Davis Coffee Shop; Owens in Illinois; Delco Remy in Anderson, then Muncie Delco Battery and retired in 1978.
He was a member of Corinth Congregation Christian Church and Delaware Masonic Lodge #46, F &AM, where he was Past Master.
Thomas enjoyed fishing; hunting; bowling and playing golf.
Mr. Powell was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He flew 74 missions in Europe and was decorated with the EAME Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars; the Air Medal with ten Oak Leaf Clusters; the "Croix De Guerre with Palme" and the Good Conduct Medal.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary D. (Pierce) Powell, Muncie; two sons, Mike Powell, (wife-Sherry), Muncie and James A. Powell, (wife-Denise), Holiday, Florida; five grandchildren, Laura Heidorn, (husband-Brian), Cincinnati, Ohio, Amy Bane, (husband-Tony), Richmond, Natalie Powell, Holiday, Florida, Rachel Powell, Holiday, Florida and Robin Powell, Holiday, Florida; five great grandchildren, Alia, Noah, Lauren, Alexa and Carson; one step-brother, Benjamin Powell, Houston, Texas; one step sister, Martha Lou Chadwick; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, George L. Powell; and four sisters, Lelia Wilcox, Leta Trapp, Avelene Churpek and Fairy Shaw.
Services will be held 11:30 a.m., Monday, July 13, 2009 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel with Pastor Junior Byrd officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, 10703 N. State Rd 3, Muncie, with Military Rites by Veterans of Delaware County Honor Guard.
Family and friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday or after 10:30 a.m. on Monday. There will be a Masonic Memorial Service at 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
