Obituary

Wayne Earl Janeway died July 22, 2023, at Copper Trace Family-First Senior Living in Westfield, Indiana, at the young age of 90. Despite an Alzheimer's disease diagnosis that robbed him of his ability to carry on conversations, Wayne's playful demeanor and telling facial expressions persisted—he (unsurprisingly) became a favorite of his Copper Trace caregivers who loved and treated him like family until the very end.

He was born December 6, 1932, to Donald Ray and Gladys Laverne (Snyder) Janeway in Fountain County near Veedersburg, Indiana, the middle of five siblings. The family later moved to Muncie where he attended Royerton schools and met love of his life Norma Jean Cary. Wayne lettered in basketball, football, baseball, and track at Royerton High (now Delta High School) and graduated in 1951. He and Norma Jean married in 1952 and planted roots in what became a beloved family home for five on State Road 3—sons Philip and Timothy were born in 1953 and 1954 respectively, and daughter Sharon in 1956.

An Indiana country boy through and through, Wayne worked at Warner Gear, Kessler Fuel and Feed, and was the night shift supervisor at Broderick's Tool and Die before its closure.  He retired in 1997 from First Merchants Bank where he was the facilities manager for more than a decade. Wayne came from a legacy of farmers and worked the land of two more than 100-year-old family farms his entire life.  He got his start as a kid helping his grandfather on the Janeway family farm in Hillsboro, Indiana, and later worked with various Hamilton Township farmers including in-laws Rayburn and Nellie Cary in Muncie. Both farms are still family owned and operated. He loved antique tractors and spent his free time restoring several Olivers and the occasional John Deere.

Wayne was a proud founding father of the Hamilton Township Volunteer Fire Company established in the metropolis of Royerton in 1974 where he served as a volunteer firefighter for more than 25 years. He particularly loved manning the grills for the company's annual Hog Roast fundraiser and will wear his dress uniform for his memorial service. He was also a long-time member of Muncie's Eden Church where he and Norma were married, serving as both a Deacon and Trustee. Wayne loved playing, watching, and following all sports (particularly IU basketball and Cincinnati Reds baseball) and was a proud sidelines dad cheering sons Phil and Tim as they followed his sporty footsteps at Delta High School.

Wayne and Norma traveled extensively throughout North America with Eden Church friends, seeing sights like Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyon. They also enjoyed adventures in Europe when visiting daughter Sharon and son-in-law Matt who was stationed with the US Army in Germany. Wayne loved to take long Sunday drives, veering off the highway to explore the backroads of Indiana, often searching for tractors in the weeds.  He also had a love of trains that began when he was a youngster, travelling by train to visit his grandparents in Hillsboro.  He had an elaborate set up of multiple model trains that were of great pride for him.  He also loved fishing and made several trips to Canada with son Tim and nephew John Jones. Wayne never knew a stranger and helped anyone and everyone, anywhere he was needed. He was absolutely loved by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Laverne; his wife of 41 years Norma Jean;
brothers Leon Janeway and Carl Janeway; sisters Naoma (Janeway) Capps and Eleanor (Janeway) VanHoos; daughter-in-law Cathie Janeway; and grandson Joshua Wayne Janeway. He is survived by sons Philip Janeway (wife Debbie) of Indianapolis and Timothy Janeway of Muncie, and daughter Sharon Boison (husband Matthew) of Westfield; grandchildren Amanda Hubbell (husband Timothy), Matthew Janeway, Anya Janeway (fiancé Jason Brown), and Rachel Boison; and special friend Beverly Cassel, as well as several nieces and nephews.
